Bushfire at Warrumbungle National Park

Over the last couple of days a terrible, horrific bushfire has impacted on the Warrumbungle National Park, Siding Springs Observatory, 33 homes and numerous rural buildings near Coonabarabran in New South Wales, Australia. The bushfire is believed to have burnt out some 500 000 hectares and now has a fire front of over 100km in length.

Obviously the fire is a terrible tragedy for the people living in the region, as well as the natural wonder that is the Warrumbungle National Park. This fire was started by lightning strikes in a major heatwave currently being experienced in Australia. The tinder dry conditions and gale force hot winds have fanned the blaze and even now as I write, the bushfire is again threatening homes in the region and is expected to burn for weeks. 

The Warrumbungle National Park is one of my favourite places in Australia and I have visited the region many times. It is a sad and tragic disaster in more ways than one.

Wambelong Creek: Warrumbungle National Park

I have been having a lot of Internet issues just lately – real difficulty getting online and staying online. It just keeps dropping out. Apparently it had to do with the shaping of my service – overdone it on the bandwidth apparently. Anyhow, it is all sorted now and hopefully normal service can continue, especially given I have increased my bandwidth allotment.

Today’s photo is of Wambelong Creek in the Warrumbungle National Park, which is near Coonabarabran in New South Wales, Australia. This is an area known as Wambelong Gorge.

Warrumbungle National Park: Timor Rock

Today’s photo is of Timor Rock, which is located on the road to Warrumbungle National Park from Coonabarabran. Timor Rock is actually within the national park and can be accessed from a park in front of the rock.

Warrumbungle National Park: White Gum Lookout – Scribbly Gum Bark

Today’s photo was taken on my recent trip to Warrumbungle National Park in New South Wales, Australia. This photo was taken at Whitegum Lookout and shows what is typical of our Scribbly Gums. The ‘scribble’ on the bark is inscet damge and not graffiti.

Warrumbungle National Park: Grand High Tops

Today’s photo is a panoramic shot taken from the Grand High Tops overlooking the Warrumbungle wilderness. This shot includes The Breadknife in the middle of the image and Belougery Spire dominating the right of the image. The photo was taken during my recent visit to the national park in December 2011.

Warrumbungle National Park is found in New South Wales, Australia, not far from the towns of Coonabarabran and Gilgandra.
