Using Lift

If you ever wonder about the various apps I post about on this Blog – generally Sundays – they are usually apps I use already or have begun to use. The one I posted about today is called Lift, which is a relatively new app for the iPhone. I have just started to use it today and it looks a fairly easy one to use and it could be quite useful. 

To start with I am tracking my multivitamin taking. I decided to start taking these as an added preventative for the flu and cold sores (which as you know I seem to have a lot of lately), as well as a general top up for my dietary intake. Each day I simply check off on the app that I have taken the multi and the app continues to track my progress on developing this habit and keeps statistics. 

If I like what it does with the multivitamin tracking I’ll probably start to use the app for other purposes also.

Voting

This weekend just past, I had to vote in the local government elections in New South Wales, Australia. Voting is compulsory here or you cop a small fine. I think it is currently $50-55.00 AU for local government elections. Many chose to pay the fine, while others cast a ‘donkey’ vote, or one that was useless deliberately. Some put down the US president as a choice, while other doodled on the ballot paper. Some others probably tried to vote correctly but did the wrong thing. Many votes were passed in as invalid.

In the local government area where I live, I can’t say that I knew much about the various candidates – with the exception of one whom I regard as a waste of space in local government. Needless to say I didn’t vote for him. I found myself simply voting along traditional lines because I knew no better.

Most candidates are viewed as clowns or worse in elections here, which is quite a shame. Serving one’s country in government should be seen as an honourable profession. However, it is not and those who actually have something useful to offer turn away from the process because of the joke that government is often perceived to be. Those who really can make a difference are choosing to avoid serving in government and that is a real shame.

Treasure Island was the first major novel of Robert Louis Stevenson. It was first published in 1883 and has remained a much-loved book. First penned as a story for boys, it was as a young boy that I first came across Treasure Island. It was the first real book that I ever read – certainly of my own choice. If I remember correctly, the copy I had was a small book, not much bigger than my hand and illustrated throughout. The illustrations weren’t coloured as such, but I think I may have started to ‘colour them in’ as I read the story several times. The name of the ship, ‘Hispaniola,’ came back to me in one of my first compositions at school. In that early attempt at writing I wrote a story about piracy and a ship called the Hispaniola. iPhone App: TripList

DAR.fm: Digital Audio Recorder

DAR.fm is simply put a way to record digital radio on the Internet and play it whenever you want. This service is currently in Beta, so it may play up from time to time. Having said that, it may well be a very useful service.

Online Video Rotator

From time to time when taking a video you sometimes find it better to shoot the video ‘on its side.’ Of course when this is done the video is only able to be viewed side ways. If only the video could be turned and viewed the correct way up. Online Video Rotator does this job for you, though it is limited to 3MB only. Does anyone know of a place for converting larger files – that would be very useful? Still, having an online tool that does the job even for small files is a great help.

Storybook

Today’s link is to a site for people who are interested in or are actually writing a book or books. Storybook is Open Source software and available for free. From what I’ve seen of the software and a tutorial that I found on using it, Storybook looks to be a very useful piece of software. Photocollect

Today’s link is to Photocollect, which is a useful way to collect photos from group events. The principle behind Photocollect is that everyone involved with the event is able to post all of their photos to the same place for sharing. The site is free for photo collection, however, storing photos at Photocollect does involve a fee.

EveryTrail

Today’s link is to EveryTrail, which is a very useful social network and web application for bushwalkers. It is a network that makes it very easy to share with like-minded people the activities you experience, whether those activities include bushwalking and camping, or road trips, sight seeing trips, boating, cycling, etc. With EveryTrail you are able to map (geo-tagging) just where you went and then share it with others. You can also share photos of your trip and embed your maps in your website and Blog.

Today’s link is to a site that offers a temporary email address which will expire after 24 hours. It is quite a simple service to use and is useful for signing up to a site without getting any Spam and the like.
