Crossing Over

Kevin Matthews, Michael MatthewsThis photo is another from the slides that I managed to salvage from my grandfather’s collection. I have simply called it ‘crossing over.’ Why? Because my cousin Michael and I are crossing over a bridge. Quite simple really.

I am not entirely sure where this photo was taken, but it does resemble an old bridge that once crossed a stream as you headed into the Barrington Tops from Gloucester, in New South Wales, Australia. Perhaps someone will recognise the location and either confirm or correct me on that.

I am the smaller of the two boys in the photo. My cousin Michael is on the left of the photo.

The Lake Eyre Basin

There is simply no other place like it in Australia. The Lake Eyre Basin is Australia’s ‘inland sea’ and an important wilderness location, particularly for bird breeding. If you have ever wanted to travel to Lake Eyre, this is an important website to check out.

The Grandis

The tallest tree in New South Wales – Australia. Yesterday’s photo covered the bottom of the tree on the approach to it – today’s photo shows the top of it.

A correction concerning the location of the tree is also in order. Yesterday I said it was located in Wang Wauk State Forest – and it once was. It hasn’t sprouted legs and moved elsewhere, but it has now been included in the Myall Lakes National Park.

Gloucester River Falls: Looking Further Down River

2007_0429_ 056

Today’s photo is another shot of the Gloucester River Falls area and is a view from the waterfall in yesterday’s photo. The view is of the river further downstream. It really is a beautiful location.

The climb from the waterfall to the base and further downstream can be a little tricky – especially when there has been some rain about and the river is running higher than normal.

Newcastle – Custom’s House

Here is a beautiful old building in Newcastle – Custom’s House. Across the road from the Newcastle Railway Station, this wonderful building is a landmark in it’s own right. Sadly, another old building in Newcastle that could be considered beautiful has been run into the ground so to speak – the Post Office.

Custom’s House is now occupied by a restaurant and what a beautiful location – right on the foreshore of Newcastle’s picturesque parkland area.

Whenever I catch a bus to Newcastle – I spend a bit of time here in the park in front of Custom’s House. The bus stop for the return trip (and the arrival stop) is right next to the train station and opposite this magnificent building and parkland area. It is a great little spot to pass the time while waiting for the bus.

MY MONDAY MORNING – ONCE EVERY THREE WEEKS

OK – so this Blog is about posting a photo every day and the photo is to capture some aspect of my life/experience that I can share with others. Well, today’s photo provides something of an insight into what I do on a Monday morning at work, once every three weeks.

100_1667I guess the task that has been photographed can be seen to be something terribly mundane and monotonous. However, it is part of my job and something that is essential in the operation of the retirement village in which I work. It is also plays an important part in providing (granted it is a small part, yet essential part) the overall experience that is living in the over 55s retirement resort at Tea Gardens Grange. It is another task that is taken care of for the people living in the village and adds to that terrific retirement experience that is Grange living at Tea Gardens.

Is it mundane and boring? I guess it is a mundane task – it certainly isn’t a romantic task. Is it boring – not really. I have the opportunity of interacting with many of the residents as I go about my task, as well as interacting with other staff both involved in the same task or otherwise. Also, the surroundings in which I work are hardly oppressive in any sense whatsoever. So in short, it is a part of my job that needs to be done and is not a task I would describe as particularly burdensome. Sure, you can make it that way if you wish – but I do not find it that way at all.

So what is the task – collecting the garbage bins and delivering them to the garbage pick up location and then cleaning the bins afterwards.
