Read Today: Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson

I finished reading this book today.

Treasure Island was the first major novel of Robert Louis Stevenson. It was first published in 1883 and has remained a much-loved book. First penned as a story for boys, it was as a young boy that I first came across Treasure Island. It was the first real book that I ever read – certainly of my own choice. If I remember correctly, the copy I had was a small book, not much bigger than my hand and illustrated throughout. The illustrations weren’t coloured as such, but I think I may have started to ‘colour them in’ as I read the story several times. The name of the ship, ‘Hispaniola,’ came back to me in one of my first compositions at school. In that early attempt at writing I wrote a story about piracy and a ship called the Hispaniola. Memolane

Memolane has just recently opened its online doors to all. Memolane preserves your online memories in the form of a timeline by importing your activity on other social networks like Facebook and Twitter, and plotting them on a timeline. I have been using the service for some time and have to say that I’m really happy with what Memolane has come up with. Amigo’s Castle – Lightning Ridge

There are quite a number of strange sights at Lightning Ridge in New South Wales, Australia. The photo at left is one of them. The building is known as ‘Amigo’s Castle,’ which is a private home with construction begun back in 1981.

The building was inspired by Roman ruins located near Amigo’s birthplace in his homeland – Italy. It has all the trappings including, dungeons and tunnels – that form part of the owner’s opal mine.

Amigo’s Castle can be seen while taking the self-drive ‘Red Car Door Tour’ in Lightning Ridge (visit the Visitor’s Centre in Lightning Ridge for a brochure).
